EXPLORER.EXE using 90% - 99% usage

what difference would that make, i think i have it
installed. Is it normal for it to be running with such a
high CPU usage?

Is anything else odd happenning? Often explorer can run away when there is
very heavy disk activity? Have you rebooted?

WinXP is full of bugs. Almost all (?98%) of SP1 (or SP1a) is a collection
of fixes, 324 of them. WinXP without SP1 is incomplete. It is therefore
totally irrational to start searching for a solution to your problem without
first installing SP1a to see if that resolves the issue.
