Explorer.exe error message

I have been getting an error message:
Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close:
Error Signature:
AppName: explorer.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180
ModName: ntdll.dll ModVer: 5.1.2600.2180

What has caused this? What can I do to repair?
Thanks.

Are you doing anything at the time, like running a particular program, or
some other action that triggers the error message?

It somestimes happens after I've clicked "My Computer" or "Windows Explorer"
desktop icons, but not always. Sometimes when I close the message it shuts
done the system, other times it allows me to stay on and doesn't even close
me out of what I was working on. It also has happened when I'm trying to log
onto the internet.
In the last few weeks I have started getting an additional error. This one
happens when I am trying to bring the system up after shut down or rebooting.
After the "e" for E-machines, and the Windows XP logo window, the system
goes to a blank black screen with a small blue window the says "Out of
Range". I have found that if I let the system shut down for 5 - 10 minutes
and try again, it will eventually come back up and function normally. Is
this connected? Help!?!
