Explorer.exe crashes in 'shared docs' folder.

Windows explorer gives an error message that it has to
close down when I access any subfolder in my "Shared Docs
on My Computer" folder within my 'Network Places". All
other folders on my computer or on my other networked
computer read fine. Even when I make a new subfolder with
nothing in it, explorer.exe crashes and then my desktop
resets itself. I have to copy any subfolders from
my "Shared Docs" folder to another location before I can
open it them up without crashing. Any ideas? Thanks in
advance.

I had a similar problem. I had this problem when I tried
to access shared folder's on my XP Home box and then it
would crash to the desktop. You say that you can read all
other files on that pc fine. Do you also say that other
PCS can read that folder fine, or do you mean that the PC
you are using can see other shared folder from other PCs,
but when you try to see the shared folders from that PC,
and you are using that PC, then it crashes? It sounds
like you may have changed a configuration in the workgroup
that you created that houses that shared file. When this
happened to me, eventually those shared folder's went
away, and I created a new workgroup and everything worked
fine. Hope this helps!

Hi Jon,

I just noticed the same thing on my system the other day. It's making me
buggy trying to figure it out, but I just noticed something. Do you have the
"Show common tasks in folders" option turned on in "Folder Options"? I
noticed that Explorer only crashes while opening the local SharedDocs'
subfolders in My Network Places while this option is turned on. If I change
it to "Use Windows classic folders" I can open the subfolders without
incident. What's odd is that even with the "common tasks" option on, I can
open the subfolders if I access them from the "Shared Documents" link listed
under "Other Places" in the common tasks pane on the left. Also there is no
problem if the subfolders are accessed via "My Computer" or in Explorer via
the Documents folder found in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\
Also, I noticed that the local SharedDocs folder icon is now a "normal"
folder icon and not a "networked" folder icon like it used to be. The folder
can be accessed by the other machines in the workgroup without any trouble
though. I've been trying to find a solution for this since Monday. There
have been several posts from people having the same trouble but there have
been no solutions posted yet. If you figure it out please post the solution
here. I'll do the same.

Actually, I can see and access the files on my machine
from my other machine with no problem. I'll try just
setting up another workgroup. Thanks for the suggestion!

Hi I have had this problem since about August this year
and have been looking for a solution without success, I
used a real email address in this forum once which I now
regret but I recieved a request to debug my machine using
remote access as the problem seems fairly common but the
people working on it are unable to reproduce it, I
declined this as you dont seem to be able to trust anyone
anymore I suspect it was caused by a windows update or ms
download such as advanced networking but what and when ?

Hi Mike and Jon,

I've got exactly the same issue. I noticed the issue
after performing a windows update back in June. I also
applied the same update to my laptop, and it now behaves
in exactly the same manner. I've exhausted my knowledge,
and the MS knowledge base looking for a solution.

Any help or addtional info will be greatly appreciated.

I have **exactly** the same issue in XP Pro

I just deleted the reference to shared docs in the 'my network' folder
I can view shared docs from 'workgroup computers' and all is ok
So it works fine if you remove the shared docs folder from the my network folder
Or from 'my computer' to read and write to shared docs

Wierd or what!!
