Common Tasks such as Folder Tasks, Other Places, and
Details have somehow become a permanent part of my
desktop. How can I close it?

At the same time this started happening, the icons on the
taskbar became mixed up. When the PC is first booted,
they are fine. Shortly after using the PC, they shuffle
around. For example, Internet Explorer displays the
Outlook icon.

I suspected a virus but Symantec Antivirus says I'm clean.

Any suggestions?

Thanks, Tim.

Tim,

For Common Tasks issue:
Click Start, Run and type "regsvr32 /i shell32". Restart Windows. If this does not help, download the fix from Doug Knox's site:
