Explorer closes when viewing large AVI files

I am having trouble working with large AVI files.
I have a Celeron 2.4Ghz computer with 750 Mb ram and an 80Gb HDD
When trying to highlight a large AVI file, around 300 MB or so Windows
Explorer shuts down and then starts up again (most times).
I thought it might be a corrupt explorer.exe file but when I try to burn my
AVIs to DVD it happens also in PowerProducer.
Any ideas guys would be great, I want to send the DVDs to the kids
Grandmother for Christmas.
