I uninstalled and deleted a prog, subsequently re-installed it from Ghost
backup (restored to C:\ Program Files, the original location). Somewhat
surprised to find that
1/ "Search" will not find it
2/ It's not listed in "All Programs" - even after sevearl re-boots since.
Prior to uninstall/delete, the prog folder/files were listed as normal.

It is listed when going the long hard way (My Computer/C:/Program Files
.... ) from which I created a desktop short-cut. This short-cut IS found on
Search - its name is same as the exe to which it relates, and the prog
works. Why won't a normal "Search" find/list the folder/files, and why is
it not listed in "All Programs"?

XP/SP2 fully updated, totally virus/adware-free, Athlon 64 3400+, 1 gig RAM,
no other glitches. Totally baffled !

When you install a program, a good/normal program does this :
+ it copies the files (that you copied from ghost backup)
+ it creates the shortcut (in All programs / desktop)
+ it makes the entries in registry (if it needs them)
+ it puts the required files on hard disk ( e.g. log files, dlls, application
folder)
+ it makes an entry in Add/Remove and register itself in windows
+ makes it service (depend on program)

When you uninstalled, it removed the shortcuts and many required files. If
the program works now then make the shortcuts manually. The shortcuts will
not just return automatically.

Ayush, totally agree with what SHOULD happen - that's what happened on
original installation (hence, it was available in Search and Add/Remove
programs, in order to uninstall and delete in the first place).
The question remains - why doesn't it happen after re-installing the Ghost
back-up?

The new short-cut, as I already said, has been done manually. The original
question is (with a live and active program physically on the disk in
Program Files directory, original location) why is it not reported in
Search, or in Add/Remove Programs?

To re-phrase the question - how does one "refresh" the "All Programs" list ?
On further reflection, I believe that to be the core of the problem.

Would appreciate further thoughts ....
