exploit.ani again

I was trying to find an answer to a defragmentation issue by googling, and
after clicking on a promising link found myself with a curious delay, a blank
screen - and then an alert from AVG, which had detected exploit.ani in a
temporary internet file.

So I quarantined it, cleared everything out with Ccleaner, and ran a full
scan with AVG, Superantispyware, and the Microsoft Malicious Software removal
tool. All were clear.
But when I looked at the AVG log afterwards, I found it had actually
detected TWO similarly infected files, not one, yet it only offered to
quarantine one of them. It didn't matter, because Ccleaner swept it away
anyway, but the whole experience gave rise to several questions:
1. Is this typical of antivirus/antispyware alerts when triggered by TWO
files? Are they really only equipped to deal with one?
2. Should Defender have responded, as well as AVG? Or doesn't an exploit.ani
infected file count as spyware?
3. Would this file have in fact been harmless to me anyway, because I have
the relevant protective Windows patch in place?

4. Finally, one for Robin. Robin, have you noticed if something has changed
in the way AVG handles the Virus vault? I used to be able to view all the
files in it by exploring the folder C:\$VAULT$.AVG, but now the contents are
invisible. (I can of course still inspect them from the AVG control centre.)
