Exploding File Size

With only a small change in content, the size of my Excel
file went from 1M to 5M. I deleted everything from the
sheet and it is still 5M. I then copied every sheet to a
new workbook, saved the file, and it's back to 1M.
 
Which version of Excel?

97 is notorious for this sort of thing.
