expired certificate (Word 2002 macros)

Guest

Anyone know how to get past this problem? Every time I bring up Word I have
to click to enable or disable macros. I've read thru all the macro help to no
avail, so please don't send me there. I also checked out the Caere website.
NADA. The message that pops up is

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Office\Office1
contains macros by Caere Corporation
A certificate (signing or issuer) has expired.
then I am forced to manually enable or disable macros. Anyone ever dealt
with this?

The probable cause is an add-in installed by an old Caere product,
probably an OCR program. Look in Word's Tools > Options > File
Locations dialog to find the location of Word's Startup folder, then
close Word. Use Windows Explorer to navigate to the Startup folder and
look for a template (.dot file) that looks like it came from Caere. If
you can narrow it down to one, then move it to another folder (or
delete it, since it isn't doing you any good). If you can't tell which
one it is, start moving files out of Startup one at a time and
restarting Word each time, to see which one causes the message.

This general problem of startup messages is covered in section 4 of
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm.

I followed your instructions. There was NO .dot file in startup folder; I did
a search for "*.dot" files and there are only 2: FineReader6.dot in
c:\Program Files\AbbyyFinereader 6.0 and, in each user (4) with an account on
this computer [Me, me-non administrator, my son and guest], such that
NORMAL.DOT is in
c:\documents & settings\suzy\application data\microsoft\templates (where
suzy is any one of the 4 account names). I uninstalled an old OmnipagePro 9.0
and deleted every stray OP file I could find. I don't know what else could be
caere corp.
But in trying to clean up, I made the problem worse. Now I get the same
macro security message 6 times (what virtually always happens when I try to
figure these things out):
Now, in addition to the security message aboutC:\Program
Files\Microsoft\Office\Office1C:\Progra~1\COMMON~1\MICROS~1\SMARTT~1\FDATE.DLL
now repeats for
C:\Progra~1\COMMON~1\MICROS~1\SMARTT~1\MOFL.DLL
C:\Progra~1\COMMON~1\MICROS~1\SMARTT~1\FPLACE.DLL

Could I solve this problem by uninstalling word completely and reinstalling
it from the distribution disks (Office XP (professional) Version 2002? I read
the FAQ page, but nothing seemed real relevant.
This is driving me crazy. I have Medium security set. Low isn't
recommended, but seems the only way to get around some of the problems.
I really appreciate your help (even if you don't want to pursue this).
Thanks.
I've been struggling with evolving technology from my niche in the
humanities since the early 80's w/ my compupro s-100 bus system. I loved cmp
and Wordstar! I hate having to waste time using a mouse. So these error
messages really get to me. Another defect: I can't let go of a problem til
it's solved. But I just can't stay abreast. Thanks again.

Hi Suzanne,

The DLL files you listed are the code files for Microsoft's "Smart
Tags". The expanded path to the folder that contains them is
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Smart Tag

Smart Tags really shouldn't be causing any security messages, but I
suppose anything is possible. In Word or any other Office program, try
selecting Help > Detect and Repair to see if that gets rid of the
messages.

You can also try removing Smart Tags (and if you have any use for
them, then reinstall them) as follows:

- In the Windows Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
- Click Microsoft Office and then click the Change button that appears
on the right side.
- Leave Add or Remove Features selected and click Next.
- Check the box for "Choose advanced customization of applications"
and then click Next.
- Click the + sign next to Office Tools to expand it.
- Click the icon for Smart Tag Plug-ins.
- Click "Not available" in the popup menu. A red X appears on the
icon.
- Click the Update button. Wait for the message that the update was
successful.

If you want to reinstall Smart Tags, repeat the same steps but choose
"Run from my computer" instead of "Not available".

Thanks, Jay. I tried your first solution and it seems to have solved the
problem. Didn't even realize that "repair" thing was there! So nice to
eliminate an annoying obstacle to just getting on with it. Many thanks.

I had the same problem as Suzanne about receiving an expired certificate in
Word (macros). I read your answer and used your solution. Thank you. But

Caere make scanning software with add-ins to Word. Add-ins, especially old
add-ins can be problematical.

Caere manufactures scanning and OCR software, and probably they have a
word add-in.
