Expanded memory manager

Running XP Professional OS...

Before loading a certain MS-DOS based program, my instructions say to click on Memory tab, and in the EMS area, select 4096. This part was accomplished, but when I start the install from the CD, I am unable to finish because I get a notice that "Your expanded memory manager is not loaded..."

(1) Being a new machine, is there something I can "turn on" that will allow the expanded memory manager to function? How?

(2) How can I see the CONFIG.SYS file to see if it contains the elusive expanded memory manager?

XP doesn't use CONFIG.SYS

Look in the \system32 directory and you'll find CONFIG.NT and AUTOEXEC.NT.
Edit/modify either one if these as required.

I would like to point out to you that XP does not have DOS. It is not written
on or over DOS so does not have it. As DOS is a dinosaur it too will be
history. Some DOS based programs may gain some function if you use the
Compatability mode. The closest that XP has to DOS is a command line
interface which emulates the DOS environment to allow the old style commands.
You may even be able to trick older DOS programs, which will most likely be
ancient games that you still enjoy, by exploiting XP's Memory setting. Many
older DOS games use the Expanded Memory Specification (EMS), which XP does
not support by default. Right-click the executable file, choose Properties,
then click the Memory tab. Under Expanded Memory, choose Auto from the
drop-down list. If that doesn't work, you may need to try other EMS settings
or dig out the DOS program's documentation to see if it says anything about
memory settings.}:~)
