.exe files opening in wordpad

My applications in XP home are no longer running. Any
file with an .exe extension opens in wordpad by default.
I know this is an association issue, but I can't seem to
find where ot change it, or what to change it to. I've
tried using system restore, but it says I have no restore
points set (which is not true), so I can't got there
either.

ANy help?

Explorer, Tools->Folder Options, File Types tab, find .EXE, and delete it.
