.exe Extension Problem

Hi
I have recently associated an exe file to a particular program. However, since then, exe files uses that particular program and error is prompted. (eg: exe files which are supposed to use Internet Explorer to open as Applet used that particular program to execute and error is prompted) I have tried to go to folder => Tools => Folder Options => File Types -- to try to change stuff but changes make things worst and I have to restore back.
Thanks.

Hi,

Go to www.dougknox.com, click on WinXP Fixes, then on File Association
fixes. Download the .exe fix and run it on your system.

Hi Dan,

Go to Start/Run/CMD and type in: assoc

Copy the line for the association you wish to restore. A Command Prompt
window will open. Right click in this Window and select Paste. Then press
Enter.

More information:

ASSOC [.ext[=[fileType]]]

..ext = Specifies the file extension to associate the file type with
fileType = Specifies the file type to associate with the file extension

Type ASSOC without parameters to display the current file associations. If
ASSOC is invoked with just a file extension, it displays the current file
association for that file extension. Specify nothing for the file type and
the command will delete the association for the file extension.

Hi
When running the ASSOC command, it shows that
..ext = exefil
I think by changing this will affect all my exe files for other program. To explain further, currently, there are exe files which when i open in other PC uses Internet Explorer, however, when run on my PC, it uses a particular program which is not supposed to. Not all exe files are affected, since some exe files such as WinZip32.exe will still run on WinZip program.
As for the link you referred to, since the extension is exe, when i right-click on the file, it does not have "open with" options.

Dan,

The edit from Doug should have fixed this, if it was a basic .exe
re-association. From here you are really needing to go into the registry
yourself and see what is going on. You never did mention what or which
program. This is not all that difficult to fix.

Open With, is a totally different issue. Please post back with more detail,
with plenty detail.
