.exe .com .lnk files can't run. but can open the document direct

I hav the same problem as Gene post at 21/Sep/2004.
All the icon on my XP destop become blank. all the link no respone at all.
Even all the exe, .com files also. I try to run msconfig/ cmd/ regedit/ ...
sorry.. non of it can be run. Even the system restore( I try browse direct
already ). But disk defragment can. I go online to TrendMicro website to scan
online.. found 6 virus then clean. still the same result to me. what happened
!!!!!!!!

But the funny thing is if i double click direct on a word/ excel/ text or
picture files.. it will launch the programs.

Did you try the following link to Doug Knox's web site and run the fixes for
..EXE and .LNK files:

You may also have to run the fix for .REG files as well.

That figures. You are then using the file association for the
documents; the other you are using the ones for exe and com. Some
trojan took these over, to get itself run, then load the item you
expected. It has been removed from the chain. Go to
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm
and get his file association fixes. I suggest right clicking the files
from there and use Merge to merge a registry file back in to correct the
association
