.exe association

This will be hard to explain. I was creating an install
file for a VB program I wrote. I was using a third party
program to build the install file. I am a novalist at this.
Anyway I was doing a new file association for one of my
file extensions which .exc. Well I miss typed it with .exe,
I know stupid mistake. Anyway I run build to build the
install file and tested it. I then uninstalled the program.
Now every program that uses the .exe extension will not
load. I tried doing a restore install using my windows xp
disk. Everything installed just fine but I still can not
load any programs. Does anyone know how to fix this without
doing a complete new install of windows, don't want to
loose all my files. Thanks for any help.
