Exchange Server missing in Information Services list

We had a user not only remove the Exchange Server from his Outlook profile, but also remove it from the Information Services list, so he couldn't even add it back in. I tried to add it back in by using our Office 2000 CD and the Have Disk... button on the Information Services box, but I guess I wasn't able to find the correct .inf file or installer. After messing around, I did the following

- Copied the mapisvc.inf file from C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\MAPI\1033\NT from a good machine to the non-working machine
- Deleted the Outlook profile and recreated i

Once I did those steps, the Exchange server option was listed again and I was able to open Outlook and connect to the information store

So, my question is this: Even though this worked, it seems like a workaround. Does anyone know the official way of reinstalling the Microsoft Exchange Server option in the Information Services list

How did he remove it in the first place? Wondering whether a detect/repair
would have fixed this problem too....

What he did would remove the Exchange server service from his profile...not
getting rid of the service itself in Outlook. I haven't tried this to see
whether it makes it permenantly non-"re-addable", and it sounds strange to
me....
He removed it by right clicking on the Outlook icon on the desktop,
going to Properties, and clicking on the Add button. In the
Information Services box that pops up, he selected Exchange Server
and clicked the Remove button.

I'm not sure, but I'm doubting that a detect & repair would have
worked since nothing was actually wrong. It was removed
legitimately, so Outlook probably wouldn't recognize it as a
malfunction. And anyway, wouldn't a complete reinstall of Outlook
have taken care of that?

Like I said, it's working now, so no big deal, but since it can be
removed legitimately, I'm assuming that there is an "official"
Microsoft way of reinstalling that service. Maybe I'm wrong. The
way I did it might be the right way, but it just seems so hacked.

Repairing Mapisvc.inf is the correct method. I think that if you renamed it,
Detect and Repair would probably fix it.

No, he actually removed it from the MAPIsvc.inf file. I wish they'd never
put that Remove button on the Information Services dialog. It's too
dangerous.
