I have 2 computers and a combo ADSL modem/router. The
desktop computer is always connected and works with no
issues as long as the other computer, the laptop, is not
connected. When I connect the laptop, I can ping the IP
of the desktop from the laptop (and vice versa) but I
cannot ping the IP of the default gateway on either
computer. The laptop sends an enormous number of packets
to the router and gets little response. I cannot browse
the web with either computer when the laptop is
connected. Attempting to repair the laptop connection
does not helpOnce I disconnect the laptop, however,
everything returns to normal and I can once again ping
away on the gateway from the desktop.
I think the excessive packets are "drowning out" the
router and pretty much rendering it unable to respond to
either computer (which is why the desktop will not work
when it is connected). Is this feasible?
Also, this problem occurs whether I use the ethernet or
WLAN connection to connect the laptop to the router.
This leads me to believe that it is not a hardware
problem.
Thus, if it is software based, where should I look to
attempt to terminate this process...My task manager is
acting funny and disappears after I start it...is it all
just virus oriented?
Thanks,
