Hi,
Approximately a month ago while working through my excercise book produced
by microsoft Press for the 70-270 Exam it required making a password reset
disk. Although it did not say to use the disk, for my knowledge I decided to
see how it worked, and was rather impressed initially. That is until all my
personal settings were removed, despite it saying in the wizard that that
would not occur, things like my personal home pages from Firefox were
changed, as well as other things, my systems performance plummeted to the
slowest I'd seen it in ages, MSN wouldn't sign in either.
I eventually decided to try a system rollback using System Restore.
Thankfully this worked and I was able to get everything else working. But
while doing this my external HDD remained connected, why should I disconnect
it, all the programs have been on there for ages? However after the restore I
was left with a handfull of the install files that were initially on that
partition, none of the other partitions were touched though. I have done
scans with special programs, for data recovery, and it is all recoverable.
However I would like to know is there a recommendable freeware data recovery
program, or does microsoft have one available for free download?

Thanks,

A few things for you;

And, if you're going to go playing with the system settings and mucking
about in the name of education (as good a cause as any - I usually do such
things simply because I want to see what happens) then this link should be
of interest to you and will likely save you many many hours in the future.
