Why is it that more often than not when I open a saved
Excel spreadsheet a warning message pops up saying that
the particular file is already opened and I cannot have
two files of the smae name active at the same time.

I just click the message and continue-but it is annoying

Try to re-register excel

start>run

Excel.exe /regserver


that is under windows>start>run
and there is a space between exe and /regserver

you can also try
if that doesn't work try

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Excel.Exe" /regserver


replace the path with your path (quotes included)
