Excel XP - green triangle in cell?

I have just transitioned from XL2000 to XP. Several cells have a little
green triangle in the upper left corner. What is this? Can I decide it's
something I don't need or want? If so, how can I turn it off?

Tools, Options, Error Checking controls whether this feature is on/off and
what error conditions to flag.

Tools>Options>Error Checking. Uncheck "Enable background error checking".
