When inserting an Excel chart into word (as an object) the
Excel chart is much larger than the original. I know how
to fix this. My question is why does it get inserted in
such large size.
 
It *may* be problems with the window Zoom settings.
Excel often gets anything other than 100% wrong - such as when memory
resources are getting low. It must be a huge calculating job if Word
zoom is different to Excel.
 
Right click on the graph in Word and select Format Picture; one of the
tabs is for Size.
