Excel Upgrade question

We are using MS Office 2000 Professional. We would like to upgrade only
the Excel 2000 to 2003. Can we just upgrade Excel without upgrading the
whole MS Office suite? If so, should we expect any conflicts when we run
MS Word 2000, PowerPoint 2000, etc or can Excel run nicely on it's own?
Our systems are 2 year old XP Pro and Home versions. Thanks for any
informative response.

AD,

Several years ago using NT4.0, I upgraded Office 97 by
installing Access 2000. After 4 hours on the telephone, over two days,
with English speaking Microsoft support people, it all finally worked.

That a horror story you shouldn't have to experience. Multiple installs
of the Office suites are now common - I have Office 97, 2000, 2002.
I would recommend leaving your current Office/Excel installation alone
and installing the new Excel version in a folder separate from the
existing installation. You then don't have to worry about compatibility
issues. The last Excel version installed becomes the default application.

Do a 'custom' install and do not overwrite/replace the older version.
The "upgrade" version is complete and does not require files from
the earlier version.
You may want to rename your current start menu Excel shortcuts
(prior to the install) to avoid them being overwritten by the new install.
Avoid running both Excel versions at the same time.

That's my take on the subject, you may get additional or conflicting
advice.

My experience is similar to Jim's. I originally installed Office 97,
installed Office 2000 in addition, and then installed just Excel XP. I have
not had any problems. They all co-exist happily.
