Excel tries to load .dot templates on startup.

I replaced an aging computer with a DELL machine running XP HOME. I installed my OFFICE 2000 and updated through SP3. When I open EXCEL to load a worksheet, EXCEL tries to open every .dot template (which is of course a MSWORD template!) I have recently created or modified. This problem happened starting in October even before I added the SP3 patch

Any ideas

Have you saved your .dot files in the XLStart folder? Or is your XLStart
folder set to a non-standard location?

Actually, I found out that I had set the path to my templates in the "Alternate startup file location:" box under the "General" tab in "Options, Tools". Why it was selecting only recently modified .dot templates out of all the other WORD and EXCEL templates stored there is beyond me.
 
Excel will try to open any files it finds in either the XLSTART folder or
"Alternate startup file location" or "at startup, open file in". This could
be the source of your problem.

First thing I would try is to start Excel in Safe Mode so you bypass any
XLSTART folder or "Alternate startup file location" if you have one entered.

Enter this at Start>Run(your path may differ) to start in Safe Mode

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\excel.exe" /s

Your path may differ.

Then I would check the Tools>Options>General and delete any path in "Alternate
startup file location".

I would move any files from the Office\XLSTART folder that aren't
Personal.xls, Book.xlt or Sheet.xlt.
