Excel tips that don't work in Inside Office newsletter

Always look forward to various Office tips but must be
missing something this time.
Latest Inside Office has Crabby Office Lady tips for Excel
that suggest a quicker way to move a cell "without leaving
a blank space."
The procedure suggested for Excel 2000 - wait to see
arrow, hold Shift key down, move cell, release Shift key --
does not work. The cell moves but a cell containing a
blank space remains.
And the later keyboard shortcut (Alt + Down Key) to show a
list of anything previously written in the column above
seems to apply only to Text.

Hi Al Dahl,

Dragging a cell with Shift key pressed only move a cell "without leaving a
blank space." if you insert the cell on the same row (Vertical cursor to
insert) or in the same column (Horizontal cursor to insert)

When you drag a cell with shift key pressed, you're cutting and inserting
the copied cell. When the cursor is a vertical line shift cell right and a
horizontal line shift cells down.

I hope you understand

Hi, Orlando.

With Excel XP I can select a range and shift-drag it to any location on the worksheet. It
doesn't have to be in the same row or same column. I'm pretty sure it worked that way in earlier
versions, too.

Oops... I think I missed the critical phrase in your message ... "without leaving a blank
space". You are correct. If I drag a cell to a different row or column, the blank space is left
behind.

For this to work you must hover the mouse pointer on one of the four sides
of the cell to be moved. You know you're there when the pointer has a
four-headed arrow. Then press Shift and hold Shift as you drag up/down or
left/right. You know you're doing this right when the cursor changes to an
"I-beam" shape (vertical or horizontal depending on the direction you're
going).

When you get to your destination, first release the mouse pointer and then
Shift.
