I have been attaching excel spreadsheets to my e mails
through Outlook. There are several people that can not
seem to open the attachments. Why? Any ideas?

Outlook is a bit of a quirky email program. It doesn't always follow
Internet standards in every respect. So if you attach a file and send it
out, it may only be accessible by other people who use Outlook.

Outlook has a setting for using the standard means of attaching files, but
I don't know what it is. Ask in the Outlook groups. You may have to
upgrade your Outlook to a newer version.

If you use rich text format, try plain text or html.

If that doesn't help, then depending on the errors the recipient gets, you could
tell them to reregister excel.

Tell them to:

Close Excel and
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /unregserver
then
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /regserver

The /unregserver & /regserver stuff resets the windows registry to excel's
factory defaults.

It couldn't hurt and it might help.

Are your recipients opening directly from Outlook?
I've found this to be risky at times (sometimes works, other times not),
whereas I never have a problem if I detach(save) the attachment first.

Again, this has been my "(in)experienced experience".

I've sent and opened 10's of thousands of excel documents via Outlook
,most of the time opening directly from Outlook. I have not had a
single issue opening an excel file this way.
