Excel spreadsheat

I have a simple spreadsheet with columns of figures. All cells are formatted
as numbers. If I use = A1 +A2 I get the correct sum of the two numbers in
each cell. When I use autosum I get a zero returned.
When I try to get one cell equal to another ( both formatted as numbers) I
get the formula in the cell ie =A2 and not the figure in the cell A2. Can
anybody please help.

If you type in =SUM(A1:A2), what happens?
Where you typed in =A2, format the cell as general, or numbers, press<F2>
and <Enter>. what do you get then?

Again massie many thanks for your reply. It appeared the cells were not
responding to the cell format. I formatted the groups of cells as numbers and
set for two decimal places. The outcome was that the cells were not
responding to the format until I double clicked each one. I opened another
spreadsheet copied the data by column then formatted to number and all was
OK. Alas I did not keep a copy to play about with. I thought it may have been
a simple fix on the spreadsheet. Many thanks for your quick response.
