Excel opens multiple copies of workbook

When I open an excel file it opens up fileName.xls:1 and fileName.xls:2. You
can ctrl + tab to view each, but I don't want two copies. How did this
happen and how do I get only 1 copy to open? Thanks!

Sounds like you've create a new window in the workbook. If you look at the
title bar it will say something like Workbookname:2 as the name.

Just click on the Close Window button in the right side of the menu bar, not
the close application button on the title bar, to remove the additional
window.

This feature is handy if you need to view one area of a worksheet while
making changes in another area.
