Excel On A Shared Drive

We have an excel spreadsheet on a network drive. One user accesses it in the
head office and other accesses it over VPN connections. Sometimes when
people access it and someone else has it open they don't get the popup to
say that it is already open. Is there some setting for this that needs
altering on the file? Also why would you get disk full errors when you try
and save changes although their are no quotas or limits for any user?

I have exactly the same problem. About once in every hundered times of
opening a spreadsheet on a shared folder I am not told that there is another
user already in the workbook. This is for many different spreadsheets (none
of which are shared).

99% of the time when this happnes, if I have made chnages I am then told
that this will overwrite chnages and do i want to continue - it is at this
point that I realsise someone else is in the spreadsheet so I exit without
applying any changes. However the next time of opening the spreadsheet it
will be Corrupt and any pivot tables will have benn lost during the repair
process.

There is no consistency as to which spreadsheets or when this occurs -
however it is extremely frustrating.

Does anyone know why this may be happening?
