Excel not working

P

Phil Byers

I am running Office 2000 on a Windows 98 PC (sorry but
that is what is available to me at my company). I have
been using this setup for about 18 months now without any
problems.

On Friday the 10th, I tried to open a spreadsheet from a
shortcut on my desktop (I had been using this same
spreadsheet less than 15 minutes before without a
problem). I got the hourglass and then everything froze
up. I had to power off the PC to reset.

Office 2000 has been uninstalled and reinstalled, but I
still can't start Excel. When I try to start it from
Start-Program, I get the initial splash screen but then my
system locks up. Again I have to power the PC off to
reset everything.

All other parts of Office are working OK. I use Word and
Outlook extensively and haven't had a problem with either.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Search for you excel toolbar customisation file xxxx.xlb (the name changes
with version). Move it from it's location and restart XL. If it is OK then
this is corrupt. Excel creates a new one when one doesn't exist, so you
need do nothing more. You will have lost any toolbar customisations though.
If that's not it, replace the old file and post back
