Excel keeps putting .xls] on my sheets and then I get an error

I have a workbook that I have names sheets without issue before. Now I am
renaming them and each time I enter the new name as I click to the next sheet
it put .xls] in front of the name and it I click on it to make a change it
gives me and error because of the . and the ] and it will not let me out of
the error even if I overwrite it and it wont let me close the workbook HELP
 
Close excel
open windows explorer
go to the folder that holds that file
rename that file so that you don't have any [' or ]'s in it.

Back to excel and try it out.
