Excel ignores "Sheets in new workbook" setting

My Excel 2003 (v11) SP3 is ignoring the "Sheets in new workbook"
setting and always opens with 3 sheets!
The registry setting HKCU/Software/Microsoft/Office/11.0/Excel/Options
-> Defsheets = 1
but Excel always has 3 sheets.
Even if you change it to 5!
Have recently installed Office 2007 Compatability Pack - but can't
think that is the problem.

First, I wouldn't edit the registry to change a value that can be changed via
the user interface (under the Office button|excel options).

Second, do you have a book.xlt in your XLStart folder. I didn't test it in
xl2007, but in xl2003, if I have a book.xlt, then this setting isn't used when I
click on the New icon on the standard toolbar.

But if I click on File|New... (with the ellipses), then book.xlt is ignored and
that setting is used.

You legend. There was an template in XLStart.
My reference to the registry was just to prove that the setting was
getting saved.

About all I can think of is that you created a Book.xlt Template with 3
sheets and stored in your XLSTART folder.

That template will ignore the default settings of DefSheets = 1

How many sheets do you get when you go to File>New...Blank Workbook?

The compatability pack did not change my settings.
