Excel ignore formula

When I write a formula in a cell, e.g. =SUM(A2:A10), Excel 2007 treat
threat as a literal text string, and no formula action occurs?
i.e. the cell just displays the content "=SUM(A2:A10)"

the option show formula is probably activated

to change

goto office button (top left)
click excel options (bottom right)
select advanced in the menu on the right
locate display option for this worksheet

uncheck - show formulas instead of their calculated value

Thanks very much, but the cell you mentioned was already unchecked.
The phenomenon seems to happen randomly; if I copy a formula which
is already working and change the range in the formula, then it
displays like a text string, whereas the original formala (the source
for the copy) still calculates.

None of this worked. I think it is a compatibility problem with the
imported Excel file, not knowing which Excel version it came from.
When copying and paste the cell range into a fresh blank worksheet,
it all works as expected.

Is it a language problem =SOM <> =SUM?

Nah, the importet s/s had cell format set to Text as default. That was
the reason.

What language is SOM anyway? If I write SOM(..), and the cell format
is set correctly, it will respondd by #NAME?
