excel hangs when pasting into field?

Hi All: Microsoft Excel 2003 (11.6560.6568) SP2 on XP sp2.

Recently, Excel hangs for about 5-10 seconds when I try to paste text into
any type of field...general, text, number, etc. I'm just copying text off an
HTML page in IE6 and pasting it into a cell in Excel. I had done this
numerous times in the past, but it's only started to hang recently.

I've tried twiddling the settings for "calculation" "Edit" "general" etc,
turning off autospell, autocomplete, external links, etc., but it still
hangs for a number of seconds before the text appears in the cell.

Has anyone seen that before?

It may be that network lag, where Excel is waiting for the data to come
from the source.

It may also be setting up a link to the data so it can be updated
later.
