excel hangs - mouse movement automatically highlights cells as it moves...

I have a user having a very wacky problem.

She'll be working fine in Excel 2002 with the latest updates , then out of
the blue she looses control of selecting cells with the mouse. It appears to
randomly highlight multiple cells, deselecting cells. You cant even close
down excell at this point. You have to kill the application.

This is a dell laptop with an external ps2 mouse and an Alps track pad.

I've updated the bios on this Dell 8200 running XP Prof and I've upgraded
the Alps trackpad drivers as well.
This seems to happen 3,4 times a day. She states that it happens whether or
not she has the external ps2 mouse connected or not.

Any thoughts?

TIA

I'm not sure (and on the basis of what she said it actually couldn't be it
but just in case).
Sometimes I seem to have a problem what more or less does the same thing.
I have a wheelmouse and it appears that every now and then the wheel
"blocks" or "hangs" , giving about the reactions you describe.

Pressing the wheel firmly and leaving it then solves the problem then.

However , since she mentioned that it occurs also when she has no mouse but
a track pad connected it's not likely to be the same problem.
But maybe ....

I, as well, am not sure, but have seen other posts that mention having
"Voice Recognition" turned on causing the problems described.
Don't know anything about it, just have seen posts to that effect, might
be worthwhile investigating.
