Excel file won't open - "Cannot Find the File"

K

kimgdoran

When logged in under my own profile and I try to open an Excel file fro
Explorer I get the following message -

'Cannot find the file filename.XLS (or one of its components).
Make sure the path and file name are correct and that all require
libraries are available. '

Excel itself opens but the file won't. However If I open the fil
through Excel using File | Open it works fine (i.e. not throug
Explorer). I've tried the fixes suggested on the MS site but they don'
work, I've also uninstalled and reinstalled office.

Strangely when I log on under a different profile on my machine i
works fine, implying it's a profile dependent thing.
I did rearrange some of my shortcuts on my start menu which coincide
with this error occurring but I can't figure out what exactly coul
have caused it.

Any suggestions?

First try
Tools, options, general make sure the 'ignore other applications' is not
selected.
If this does not sort out the problem you may need to go to this as in this
post which we found when we had the same problem and it solved it.

It sounds like is a problem with the file associations. Go to Start/Run and
run this command:
Excel /regserver

Note that there is a space before the forward slash.

If you receive an error, you may need to browse to Excel.exe and include the
full path. It would look something like:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\excel.exe" /regserver
