Excel File w/ Hyperlinks sent via Email

Hello fellow Excel users. We are running into a very
complicated issue with Excel files that contain
hyperlinks. Just to give info on our setup here we are
running standard Windows 2000 Professional w/ SP4 images
on our network and Office 2000 SR-1 Standard edition.
When
users insert hyperlinks, which may be to other files or
other resources on the network, they no longer work. The
Excel files are being emailed via Outlook to internal
recipients.

The problem is when sending the file, the hyperlinks no
longer work and default to C:\Documents and
Settings\j030758\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Filename.XLS(This is not actual fileaname).

Please let me know because we are beating our heads in
the
grounds over this.

Hi,

My first inclination is that your users are (perhaps unknowingly)
creating relative links as opposed to absolute links.

A relative link will define the linked 'destination' starting from
wherever the file is located.

For example:

If I have files A.xls and B.xls thus:

C:\Data\Info\A.xls
C:\Data\B.xls

A relative link 'path' in B.xls to A.xls could be:

...\Info\B.xls

This would tell excel to look for A.xls in the 'Info' folder located
in the same folder as B.xls

If B.xls was emailed to someone and then opened on their PC in, say,
C:\My Documents\ then the relative link would look for:

C:\My Documents\Info\A.xls

HTH,

Alan.

Links to a common share on the network???

If yes, I've had better luck by using the =hyperlink() worksheet function.

They don't adjust when the workbook is saved elsewhere (like the TIF folder).

You may want to try playing around with:
File|properties|Summary tab

There's a "hyperlink base" textbox that might do what you want.

I've never really used it, but from xl2002's help:

Set the base address for the hyperlinks in a workbook
By default, unspecified paths to hyperlink destination files are relative to the
location of the active workbook. Use this procedure when you want to set a
different default path. Each time you create a hyperlink to a file in that
location, you'll only have to specify the file name, not the path, in the Insert
Hyperlink dialog box.

On the File menu, click Properties.
Click the Summary tab.
In the Hyperlink base box, type the path you want to use.
Note You can override the hyperlink base address by using the full, or
absolute, address for the hyperlink in the Insert Hyperlink dialog box.

===
It makes the =hyperlink() worksheet function look mighty simple <bg>.
