Excel dates change

I have a report which displays a column of birthdays in a mm/dd/yyyy format;
how can I change it to a dd-mm-yyy format? Thanks
 
Format > Cells... > Number > Custom and use
dd-mm-yyyy
or
dd-mm-yy

yyy is not an option since Excel doesn't know if its the first or last three
digits.
