Excel crashes when writing formula referencing to external workbookin freeze frame

D

dmkAlex

This is a problem in Excel 2003. Not sure it exists in later version.

Scenerio:

In sheet1 of book1, the frame was frozen (freeze frame) to see the
top
rows.
In sheet1 of book2, there is no freeze frame.
Write any formula in sheet1, book1 that references sheet1 of book2
will cause Excel to crash.

Work around:

Un-freeze frame in sheet1 of book1 before writing the referencing
formula.
Or, freeze a frame in sheet1 of book2 before writing the formula in
book1.

The key is, both sheets (the originating sheet and the destination
sheet in the external book) must be synchronized that both are frame
frozen, or both unfrozen.

I cannot find any reference searching the internet so I am posting
this for other.

Can someone having subsequent version try this and see if MS has
fixed
this bug?

Thanks.

I cannot replicate your problem in 2003.

I have never heard of this being a "bug" in 2003 or earlier so don't think
MS has a fix for something that may not exist.

Freezing panes should have no effect on linking.

Try a detect and repair from Help.

Are you using Excel 2003?
If you are, please try this:

Open up Excel which will open up book1
Open a new book, book2
In book2, move the cursor to C3. Then do Windows>Freeze Pane
In book2, C3 write type = and then press Ctrl+Tab to take you to
Book1. Then click the cursor at any cell.
My Excel crashes right at this point.

Let me know if you can recreate the crash in your system.

Thanks.

Like Gord, I've never heard of this situation causing crashes, but I do have
something for you to try--but don't get your hopes up!

Try changing the printer driver. I've read reports (from Microsoft--or on tech
sites, who remembers???) that most windows crashes are caused by misbehaving 3rd
party drivers (and lots of times, it's the printer driver).

So it may be worth the couple of minutes effort to try it.

Please post back with your results--good or bad.

Did you read ALL of my reply?

I tried to produce your crashing in 2003 by testing several different
configurations before replying.

That is how I reached "I cannot replicate your problem"

Even changing your default printer and restarting Excel may help with
this, as Excel will not be looking to the same drivers for it's page
layout rendering.
Note: *MIGHT* help, if the drivers are a problem and if the other
printer driver does not have the same issue.
Might do nothing, but easy to test.

Thanks for the clarification, Adam.

That's actually what I meant. And if changing the printer/printer driver works,
then go back to the manufacturer of your real printer and get a new/fresh copy
and test that.

ps. The alternative printer driver that you test with doesn't actually have to
have the physical printer connected. Just install the printer driver to test
it. You can remove it later.

Yes - I have this same problem. It also occurs when you try to
reference another sheet in the same workbook that does not have the
frozen pane. I have a hunch it has to to with the number of Excel add-
ons. I have 12 add-ins currently running in my excel. I'm sure if I
took the time to investigate, I would find that one of them (by
process of elimination) was causing this crash!

Thank you so much. I had that problem in 4 files this morning, and removing the freeze pane option fixed it. I could have only discovered that by accident while rebuilding everything. I figured the files were corrupted somehow.

Thank you so much for posting this problem.

I had been trying to create a very simple formula linking two worksheets within one Excel 2003 file and every time I tried Excel crashed. I was tearing my hair out. Removing the freeze frame from the sheet solved the problem like magic.(Incidentally it was only set on the sheet I was linking from, not to)

Out of curiosity I tried the same formula in the same file (complete with freeze frame) in Excel 2007 working in compatability mode and there was no problem.

Thanks again
