Excel Conditonal Formatting Limits

I have a large spreadsheet with a large amount of conditonal
formatting, much of it formula based. However, excel is only saving
the first 240 rows of formatting I have. The sheet was originally
part of a workboork and had been changed considerably over time as
built spreadsheet. The conditional formatting changes every other
row, and changes from column to column, so quite alot of formatting in
spreadsheet.

I have taken the sheet with the most conditional formating, saved it
into a new file, cleared all formating from row 10 down, and then
started dragging down rows to repopulate spreadsheet-hoping to be able
to save 500 rows with conditional formatting. Any ideas how I can
get 500 rows of conditonal formatting to save? I am using all of the
excel columns. I see that other people have had similar problem in
past - but I didn't see any help suggestions.

If you select a cell where the formatting works, then do format>conditional
formatting, what do you see in the box?
