Excel command-button lock up

I have a spreadsheet sent from a friend. I wish to pass it on, but need to
protect the VBA from being readable.
The problem is everytime I lock the VBA project, the command buttons on some
of the sheets can no longer function.
There is no code being executed in AutoRun etc...

Can anyone help with this? I am using MSExcel 2002 SP2.
 
I've never seen the protection of the project cause this behavior.

Any chance you're opening the workbook with macros disabled?
