Excel can't run this add-in

We are running Excel 2000. Although Excel runs okay, when starting it we
get the following message:
"Excel can't run this add-in. Excel cannot install the necessary files due
to Windows installer error 1606. ERROR_UNKNOWN_FEATURE". I have
reinstalled and repaired to no avail. Is there a fix other than
remove/reinstall?

Choose Tools>Add-ins and uncheck all the Add-ins
Close and restart Excel
One by one, re-check the add-ins, until you find the problem add-in
Leave it unchecked, and test the remaining add-ins
