excel becomes unusable

I find that I have no popup dialogues for e.g. 'convert data to columns' or
'goal seek'. If I try to do anything that needs a dialogue box, excel
highlights the box but no dialogue appears for the details of the action. I
de-installed, re-installed and applied all the updates. Still no joy. Can
anyone help?

It turns out that the dialogue box was popping up off-screen. Changing the
screen resolution to 2048x1536 showed the box way off in right-field, and I
was able then to drag it back into my normal screen area.
