Excel Auto Formats Cells

I just came accross a poblem in Excl whereby if I enter a
division calculation "+400/2" into a cell that has been
formatted with a specific number format, the cell is
reformatted to a fraction format. Can I turn this feature
off?
 
Your division calculation should read :=
=400/2

perhaps this is the problem
