If someone sends me a file that was created when their Auto Calculate is
turned off, does it also turn Auto Calculate on my machine? If it is,
is there any way to avoid this?

Thanks for the help.

Hello maacmaac,

This can be quite tricky. The calculate property is supposed to be on a per
workbook basis. Sometimes this may not always be the case. If you open a
file where it's instance/property of calculate is turned to manual, then the
open workbooks should also follow suit until you close this workbook.

Sometimes people get their calculation stuck on manual even though they
repeatedly turn it to auto. This is generally caused by them setting their
Personal.xls file calculation state to manual. Thus, with it opening
[almost] every session, all calculation is manual. When the workbook in
question (w/ manual calculation) is closed and the previous state was
xlAutomatic calculation, it should revert to this.

Calculation mode is a application level setting--but it's picked up from the
first workbook opened in that session of excel.

If you're unlucky enough to open a workbook that was saved with calculation set
to manual as the first workbook opened in that session, then you'll have to
change it via tools|options|calculation tab.

The only way I know to avoid this is to always open a workbook that was saved
with calculation set for automatic first.

But personally, I think it's easier to just change the setting when you notice
that "Calculate" in the bottom left corner in the statusbar.
