Large spreadsheet when run on XP Pro with 1GB memory we
get a microsoft error (Excel not enough memory). The
system says it still has over 666MB available.

When we run on Win98 with 128MB it is slow but we do not
get the error.

Is there a problem with Excel 97 on XP Pro?

Thank You

I can't remember this ever happening with Computer Assiciates' Supercalc 5
....or was it 4
....I've gone all "wistful" now, thinking back to those days of dos
applications that used to work properly !
....and that magical Quarterdeck that eventually came along to sort out
everything crammed into HMA - that 384k between 640k and a meg. I think
that micro/GUI apps. software took three steps forwards and two steps back
ever since then. Things are looking up with XP though :-)

Not I think so much on XP as on a machine with very large RAM. It is
asking for and being given more memory space than it can handle. IT
might be worth investigating - just for a trail - setting a limit on the
amount of RAM your Windows is allowed to see. Start - Run -
MSConfig.exe and on the BOOT.INI page click Advanced Options. There
click /MAXMEM and set in the first instance 512 MB and OK to reboot, ,
then perhaps also try 256, and see if that removes the problem. If so
the only realistic solution is probably an upgrade to a later version of
Excel, probably the current 2003 version
