excel 2007- when selecting a range to edit, it has no highlight

When I select a range to edit, ( either by mouse or by shift+Arrow keys)
the selected is not highlighted. The row and column headers change colors but
the selected range does not. I am still getting used to the newer version and
I wonder if I have toggled this feature off somehow.
This appears to only be a problem if the cell color is white
(Automatic). If I pass over an altered color ( say, with a gray background)
cell or group of cells, then I can see the Higlighting taking place as they
are highlighted.

Many people have this problem although the highlight is clearly visible,
albeit pale, to most users. MS informally acknowledged it here:
