Excel 2007 Modify Permissions Problem.

What does Modify actually do?
When I was using Excel 2003 I was able to save a file in a mapped drive
without any problems. Now I'm using Excel 2007 and in order for me to save
the file ".xls" I need to have Modify permissions turned on.

We are trying to keep people, myself included, from having too much power
when it comes to what can be done to files or sub-directories.

I only need Modify for one file in the top directory. If I’m given Modify in
the top folder, I end up having modified in all of the sub-folders as well. I
tried giving myself Modify permissions just to the file but that doesn't work
because when I try and save the file it says "Access denied. Contact your
administrator" and a tmp file gets created each and every time I press save
in the mapped directory.

Now I had a real brain storm, I'd create a sub-directory and copy the file
into that directory and give myself Modify permissions for only that
directory, there are no sub-directories in this folder. This does work except
we have around 2000 hyperlinks that all get broken. I turns out that the
first part of the hyperlink path gets changed to each and every link. There
is no way we are going to go in there and fix each link one at a time.

I’m using Windows XP Pro w/SP3 and Office 2007 Ultimate.

Boy am I bummed :(

Is there a way to allow me to just make changes just to that file and not be
able to modify any other files or is there a way I can modify all of our
hyperlinks without having to do one at a time? As far as the hyperlinks there
is just one false directory name that needs to be pulled out and this would
fix everything.

I forgot to mention my current permissions:
