Excel 2007 formulas acting weird

I opened my Excel just now to my monthly budget (from the template that I
downloaded). And I added a dollar amount to the spreadsheet, but for some
reason, it didn't take. So I experimented, I opened another template, and did
the same thing, still nothing, BUT, when I saved it, only THEN did it the
formula work. I hope someone can understand what I'm saying. In other words,
the formulas aren't working when they're supposed to. When I add or take away
a number, since it's a template and the formulas are already there, it's
supposed to act accordingly, but it's not. Please help.

do you have the spreadsheet set to 'autocalculate'?
Tools....options.....calculation and autocalcuatlion checked off?

Make sure you have Calculation Automatic on
Office button -> Excel Options ->Formulas Group ->Calculations Options
(first item) ->check the Automatic box
best wishes
