Could be lots of causes!
Your Excel may e corrupt. If so, re-install it.
Your disk may have errors on it. Let your IT guys test it for you.
Your RAM may be faulty. Let your IT guys check it for you.
How "deep" you store it has nothing to do with the entire issue.
Your Excel may require the latest service pack to be installed. Let your IT
guys check and update if necessary.
Your Vista may not have SP1 installed, in which case you will have loads of
problems! Let your IT guys check it for you.
To check whether you have any macros in the file, select Developer on the
topmost righthand tab, then select Visual Basic on the left.
The VBA window normally has four windows, 2 left and two right.. In the
upper right window, doubleclick on sheet1, and see if there is any code in
the upper right window.
Repeat for all the other sheets in the file.
Also, see if there is a heading Modules below ThisWorkbook. If so,
doubleclick, and you'll find at least a Module1. Doubleclick on that, and
you'll see code in the upper righthand window. There could also be a Module
2, 3 and so on. Exit VBA by clicking the cross upper right hand corner.
If there are macros, click on he round office icon, upper left of the
screen. Click on Save As, and select Excel Macro enabled workbook, and save
the file as a 2007 file. Some of your macros may need attention if you do
this!

Your file may be getting too big for your PC to handle. Can you lighten, by
extracting some of the old data to another file?

And so on and so forth!
