Excel 2003 - hiding layers takes ages

Dear Newsgroup,

please note that I am a non-native speaker, and though I consider myself
reasonably fluent in English, I feel a bit at a loss when it comes to
technical terms and I pre-emptively apologize for any mistranslations or
awkward descriptions.

I am currently working with a rather large spreadsheet which is organized by
a complex layer structure to show different standard reports on each layer.
Until recently, the sheet has worked flawlessly, but since our office has
been upgraded to Excel 2003, hiding any layer suddenly takes several hours
(!) at full processor capacity. Showing hidden layers is a bit better,
taking 'only' several minutes, but as this is one of my most-often used
spreadsheets, it simply cripples my work.

Has this kind of problem ever shown up anywhere else and is there any known
way to circumvent or patch this? Any kind of help would be highly
appreciated, and I already thank you for your kind assistance.

Best regards,

Hendrik

First, I don't use xl2003.
Second, I don't have a "real" response.
Third, here's a couple of links that deal with slow response.

The first is by Charles Williams and the second by David McRitchie:

http://www.mvps.org/dmcritchie/excel/slowresp.htm

Both these guys have notes about speed related issues.

Fourth, does Layers mean Worksheets? I'm guessing yes, but if it doesn't you
may want to post back. Maybe someone can offer real help.

Dear Dave,

THANKS! You saved me.
First, I don't use xl2003.
Second, I don't have a "real" response.
Third, here's a couple of links that deal with slow response.

The second link did it. It didn't deal directly with the situation I had,
but it noted that the automatic recalculation could sometimes interfere with
the screen rebuild, so I tried and changed to manual recalculation. And it
works! You have no idea what that means to me.
Fourth, does Layers mean Worksheets? I'm guessing yes, but if it doesn't you

Err, nope. I meant those groupings you can assign that will show as a small
'+' on the left and upper sidebar, and a numbered button for each layer in
the upper left corner. I have no idea how else to translate that, especially
as the German name apparently isn't congruent with the English one.

Anyway, thanks so much!

Take care,

Hendrik

Glad you got it working.

By the way, auf englisch, it's called Outlining.

(I'm quite proud of the 8 words of German I remember from high school!)
