Excel 2003 freezes on file open

This just started happening last week. When I open an excel file by
double-clicking the file Excel opens to a visually blank worksheet and
freezes. When I click the X to shutdown Excell the actual worksheet I was
opening appears for a second and the program closes. Everything opens fine
if I open Excel first and do a file/open.

Does this sound like a video memory problem? Do you think an external Video
card would solve this?

XP Pro
Office 2003
3.00 GHz
512 MB
Onboard Video Intel 82865G controller

Chip Pearson has a bunch of techniques that deal with start up errors at:

(I've never seen anything like this.)

But for problems kind of close:

A couple of guesses.

1. Clean up the windows temp folder. (then test it out)

2. sometimes the file that holds the customized toolbar settings gets hosed.
close excel
windows start button|Find (or search)
search for *.xlb
rename them to *.xlbOLD
restart excel

if it worked, delete the *.xlbOLD files and rebuild any customized toolbars.

If it didn't, rename them back to *.xlb---and read Chip's notes carefully!


And for doubleclicking in windows explorer problems:

Sometimes one of these works:

Tools|Options|General|Ignore other applications (uncheck it)

Close Excel and
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /unregserver
then
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /regserver

The /unregserver & /regserver stuff resets the windows registry to excel's
factory defaults.

Thanks for the sugestions Dave. I tried all of them and finally ran a detect
and repair which fixed the problem (at least for now!) Thanks again, chip's
page is a great resource!
